RAISING MONEY FOR & SPREADING THE WORD
ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS
As Alpha Chi Omega sisters, we raise awareness about domestic violence by promoting healthy relationships, hosting various philanthropy events throughout the year, and donating supplies to our local domestic violence shelter, Peaceful Paths. We encourage our members to be educated and aware of this issue while striving to support their community and beyond.
Our main philanthropic event is Purple Rain, a large spring event open to the entire UF community. Purple Rain is a 5-on-5 dodgeball-style tournament using paint-soaked foam dodgeballs. Various Panhellenic, IFC, and other campus organizations—coached by our sisters—compete in this event to help us raise money for domestic violence awareness. Last year, we raised $12,558, surpassing our goal! This year, we aim to continue raising funds, spreading awareness, and supporting women in our community.
We directly partner with and donate to Peaceful Paths Women’s Shelter in Gainesville, contributing clothing, canned goods, financial donations, and more. Additionally, many of our sisters intern and volunteer there weekly.
Peaceful Paths is located here in Gainesville and serves as a shelter for women who are victims of domestic abuse. In addition to Purple Rain, we host multiple service events to raise funds and supplies to help our local shelter and promote domestic violence awareness.
The fight against domestic violence is an every-day battle, but by working together, we can help end the fight.
A message from our philanthropy chair, Maria Caputo: This past fall we held our first-ever Pizza Pie with Alpha Chi at our house! This exciting event aimed to raise funds for domestic violence awareness and support the Peaceful Paths Domestic Violence Shelter, an emergency shelter and services for women who have been physically or mentally abused right here in Alachua County. By selling tickets and other various good, we raised $15,147, which helped make a difference in the lives of so many including our local survivors seeking resources.
